It is with deep regret and much sadness that I report the death last weekend of our esteemed and much-loved President Colin Wilson. Colin has been at the centre of Croydon Umpires and Scorers Association (CUSA) for around 30 years. During this time he held several offices within our organisation including Secretary. Training Officer and latterly President. He was particularly keen on the training of people to be umpires rather than just how to cram and pass exams. He introduced man management and field craft into our courses years before the national body decided that this was the route to take. He placed more importance on producing umpires who could manage a game sympathetically yet firmly rather than someone who could recite the minutiae of the laws without understanding the underlying spirit of the game.
He also placed much importance on our social functions which allowed informal interaction and discussion in less formal surroundings. Colin was a well respected umpire standing in the top division of the Surrey Championship for many seasons - topping the list one year if measured by captains' marks. He was also on the umpires panel of the MCC and Club Cricket Conference. Indeed he toured Sri Lanka with the MCC Women's team a few years ago. Colin was well liked and respected both as an umpire and as a person. Christine Hewitson from the MCC events office summed him up very succinctly saying "he was a lovely gentleman" Colin - you will be sorely missed by so many! May you rest in peace.
